Thailand remains a popular destination for backpackers and tourists alike. It’s a big country with a great deal to navigate. That’s why we’ve put together this guide for travelling in Thailand. Use these tips to help you have a safe and happy trip.

  1. Go Slow

Don’t rush your trip. Many travellers begin their journey in Bangkok. It’s worth taking at least a few days to soak up the buzzing capital’s atmosphere and spending at least one night exploring the infamous Khao San Road. After that, head south to the islands or even to the bustling city of Chiang Mai. To really explore, you’ll need at least two weeks.

  1. Don’t Overdo It

Thailand is a country populated with temples, from the tiny to the sensational. Don’t try to visit them all. Narrow it down to the most popular and do keep in mind that the country is about more than its architecture, the beach-life and street-life are also a big part of your experience.

  1. Try the Street Food

There is an abundance of tasty Thai street food, both of exceptional quality and value. But, be savvy. Remember to wash your hands before and after eating and eat where the crowds go. Also, don’t drink the tap water.

  1. Watch Out for Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are pretty much everywhere, but you don’t have to put up with being bitten to pieces. Use a repellent with around 50% of DEET by day and 100% by night. Remember to treat your clothes with a spray when you arrive, too.

  1. Visit the Markets

You have to visit an open-air market during your Thai trip. You’ll find amazing prices along with incredible products. Thailand is a mecca for counterfeits goods, though, so just be aware that you may not be buying the real deal. Also, don’t forget to haggle – you should bring the first price down by at least a third.

  1. Quality Accommodation

Thailand luxury resorts and hotels abound. Be sure to book in advance to secure the best deals and Seaview rooms complete with air conditioning!

  1. Avoid Scams

You may come across people at every corner trying to rip you off, so keep your wits about you. Don’t trust random strangers who approach you in the street with information about tours, temples and holidays. Also, make sure a taxi is metered or you agree on a price before hopping aboard a tuk tuk.

  1. Be Respectful of Culture

Thai people are proud people. Getting angry or raising your voice is not going to get you anywhere. Also, your head is considered the most sacred body part, while the feet are the lowest. With that in mind, never touch a Thai person on the head no matter what, and never point your feet towards anyone or any sacred god, like the Buddha or even the King. Remember that smiling goes a long way.

  1. Stay Hydrated

In Thailand, a refreshing beer is the alcoholic beverage of choice. You’ll find the local brew, Singha, pretty much everywhere. You must be 20 years or older to buy alcohol in Thailand. Wine is relatively pricey due to hefty import taxes.

Keep these tips in mind and you’re sure to have an unforgettable time in the Land of Smiles.
